The first section of the book includes a comprehensive introduction to the history of the lands that comprise modern Angola; a detailed chronology of important historical eras and events beginning in prehistorical times; double-page maps locating virtually all geographically referenced materials; and charts designed to aid the novice in deciphering abbreviations, spellings and the like. Although this "Dictionary" builds on Phyllis Martin's excellent first edition (Scarecrow, 1980), it is in many respects a new edition, reorganized, expanded, and updated. The heart of the work is the dictionary itself, which contains 272 entries, all of them at least revised and updated, many completely rewritten, and more than 100 appearing for the first time in this edition. With an extensive bibliographic essay and bibliography and a brief appendix.
