Despite their effectiveness in preventing and eradicating disease, substantial gaps in vaccine uptake persist. Vaccines are considered one of the greatest public health achievements of the last century for their role in eradicating smallpox and controlling polio, measles, rubella, and other infectious diseases in the United States. Vaccination rates for young children are high; however, vaccination rates remain well below established Healthy People 2020 targets for many vaccines recommended for adolescents, adults, and pregnant women. In the United States, vaccine guidelines are set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP).
